Now that I’ve decided on Rosewood and Hard Maple I have started turning the chess set I am building for my grandson. The piece shapes are shapes that appeal to me through trial and error and are easy to create on my homemade lathe. I use scrap wood to get the shape I want and then turn the piece with good wood. I truthfully don’t know what a piece will look like until I see what I like. My grandson will have a one of a kind set. Here is a picture of my first two pawns. I sanded to 3000 grit and then applied Minwax.
