Reading Chris Schwartz book on bench design and build, good read, and have decided I’m building the Roubo this winter. Not going to drop the coin on Benchcrafted so the search begins. Visited a local flea mall today and was pleasently surprised when I saw this vise in the back corner of a booth. Looked at the price and was suprised again. It was marked at 65.00. I unscrewed the nut to look at the threads and couldn’t beleive the condition of the threads on screw and nut. The end thread has a piece broken off and a couple threads has small nicks out of them. The head is in good shape, no cracks and the handle does have sone stressed cracks so I guess I’ll turn another one for it.
Main board seems to be oak but not sure about the screw. Would oak have been the choice for these? Have no idea how old this is.

Looks to be in good shape. That’s a decent deal. I like the benefits of a wood screw but I worried too much about the big temperature and humidity changes my shop goes through. Good luck with the bench build. We look forward to seeing the pics.
