Topic tags/keywords: question trick resource tip spray gun sanding veneering finishing

I am building an entertainment center. I used poplar and birch plywood it needs to be stained a dark color. My grand father says they will be different colors when the stain is applied.

Is this true? does anyone have experience with this? Should I use oil or water base. any advice would so greatly be appreciated. I have worked super hard on this and don’t wanna spoil it in the finish.

Have had great success using Gel stains. Sand to 120 (max 150) for a surface that the stain will stick to. Did a lot with poplar and birch and never had any problems.

I use Mohawk stains or varathane stains. Gel stains can not be mixed to get the perfect color. Seeing how you have two different types of wood you will ned to mix the stain to adjust it to get a nice color match.
