I am going to try and do some pen turning and I have a shopsmith but I was thinking about getting a mini lathe just for turning pens,,i know you have to get a special mandrell to use with the shop smith but I didn’t know if a mini lathe would actually be better,,can anyone give me some good advice,,,

I turned my first pen on a shopsmith. I didn’t do but a few and bought a mini lathe. Much easier with a mini lathe. I did buy the Shopsmith pen chisels and they are great. Still my favorite chisels for pen turning. I used the Shopsmith just to see if I would like turning pens, but a mini lathe is the way to go. As far as mini lathes I would only get one with a #2 MT. The #2 MT is used on many lathes where the #1 MT is limited to small lathes.
