Thought a few folks might find this interesting. 6 ft wooden ruler that seems in decent shape. Hoping to get a few ideas on a good way to go about refinishing this to save the numbering. Not sure how effective stripping this would be to try and bring it back. Not looking for perfection but i would love to put this back to work, in my shop. The brass rails are as strait as the empire 4 ft aluminum ruler I use and will be easy to polish. Just a little worried about the wooden part as i don’t want to harm the gradient markings.

Here is a photo of the date on it, 1926.

And here is the (Made in t he USA) and another symbol i cannot identify.

I would start by washing it with Murphy’s Oil soap and a scrub brush. After that, if more is needed, maybe some 400G sandpaper?

Here’s an option:

The guy claims anything water based is bad and recommends trying museum grade paste wax first. Surprisingly he then recommends red turtle wax next. I would think that would cause damage, but apparently it doesn’t. I keep meaning to try it, but haven’t had time. His credentials seem good.

Let us know what you do and how it turns out. I have an old wooden level in the same condition that I too would like to restore.

Here are the beginning results.

I ended up using denatured alcohol with 00 steel wool to clean the wood. Tryed it on the back of the ruler and it cleaned it nice without ruining the patina. I have to pick up some polish and I’ll hit the brass edges later this week. Finishing with shellac and furniture polish. Should look good when done.
