Hello all,
I’m new to turning and just bought a used delta 46-460. The lathe runs well and the spindle doesn’t seem bent and seems to run true. However, whenever I mount something ON the spindle, excessive runout is noticed. I’ve attached videos of the spindle with nothing in or on it, a live center mounted in it, a psi chuck, and a pen drilling chuck mounted.

I can’t think this is normal. Does anyone else have this problem or know of a remedy to fix this? Thanks I advance!

When I,m looking to the video my first tought is that the flange has an incorrect allignment. this alligment has to be less then 0,01 mm. I couln,t find a picture of a lathe and therefore below a pictuture of a saw alligment. You need a dial indecator for measuring.

Paul, to me it lookked live the live center was running true. You runout is in the chuck and the pen drilling chuck. Possibly the spindle adapters.
Also, if you want to show if the spindle is not true, show it from the inside of the taper. That is where the accuracy is supposed to be, not the threads, even though they are supposed to be. .......... Jerry (in Tucson)

I think this may be a solution for me. Maybe my chucks are bottoming out on the last few threads of the spindle and not quite true. If I put one of these washers on before the chuck I wonder if the buck would tighten down against it well.

Hello Pault,

Look again to your video of the runout at the spindle base.

There where the hole is in your spindle you can see that the dial indicator is showing you a runout of almost 0,03.
Look at the point where the hole is in the spindle (to lock your spindle) base, and look again at your dial indecator. It is a very short moment at a very smal part, but even a small bump can cause your problem. Often this locking hole is deformd I,m almost shure this is the reason of your problem.

When your spindle is running in the third video (http://youtu.be/3eDovdqFm24) you can control the swinging. This swinging has to be less then 0,02 mm. Swinging is less inportant than the spindle base.

I fixed the last video. Sorry about that!

Thanks for all the suggestions. I did look at the spindle by the hole and there was the slightest bit of rust/grime that was causing the runout there. By the way, that is a hole for the knockout bar to sit I. If you’re trying to hold the spindle still while installing or removing chucks. I cleaned it up and the chucks are still not running true. It has to be either crappy chucks or something with the threads on the spindle since we’ve determined that the spindle itself seems to be running true.

How tight are the tolerances on the threads? That website I linked to seemed like it may be the solution for my problem. Having the washer may take up some of the slop in the threads perhaps?

Thank you Pault for fixing the fourtht video. That is what I ment saying: when your spindle is running.

I don,t think the washer will solve your problem, but give it a try For now I don,t know what the problem can be. Please let us know when you,ll find the solution.

So I’m feeling like a putz, but I completely forgot to try out the delta faceplate that actually came with the lathe. I threaded it on the chuck and it runs perfectly. It proved to me that the threads and spindle are good. I threw the PSI chuck back on and put a flashlight behind the lathe and I can see light peeking through between the base of the chuck and the shoulder of the spindle. I just don’t think the threads in the chuck enable the PSI chuck to butt against the faceplate. I threw the PSI chuck on the PSI adapter which adapts it down to the 3/4” thread for the old craftsman lathe and it runs just fine. I ordered a pair of the spindle washers. Hopefully they will make up the space on my delta and let the PSI chuck sit flat against the spindle. Looks like all is good. Should have the washers on Friday. Looking forward to turning.

I don’t know if that lathe you have has reverse, but if it does, it might not be a good idea to use the washers in reverse if you don’t have set screws to lock the chuck onto the late… Jerry (n Tucson)

That’s a very good point. I would only be sanding in reverse, so in that case, the wobble is not as critical (in my opinion). That being said, I would not run it in reverse while sanding with the washer. I’d only use the washer if I am running it forward and turning with the tools.

Oops, in my post #12….
Referring to the delta faceplate, I meant to say “I threaded it on the spindle”, not on the chuck.
