I have a customer that wants a 9’ long 4” square post turned. It will be painted to finish. In the past I have used fir, yellow poplar and redwood. Yellow poplar turns very nicely and is consistent for density. fir does well outside for weather and such but is can be out of balance to the end and it is hard to find material with a good grain because most of the stuff available has grown so fast that there is a lot of soft grain. It is also prone to tear out and chips on the detail. In a center square section there are four rosettes ne on each face I could turn them as part of the column or separately and mount them on the post. How would you do it?

So my question is: what would you use? A secondary question is what to do for a long lasting finish? I have not been involved in the finish of any of my customer projects.
