I’ve been away from the hobby ever since we found out my wife was pregnant with my daughter a little over 2 years ago. Twenty weeks ago we found out she was pregnant again. Last week we lost our son due to a fatal genetic defect. I’m jumping back into the hobby just long enough to build a small memorial box that we can store a few keepsakes in. Does anyone have any thoughts about the best way to acquire small amounts of nice wood for this box?

JP, How much, what size and what kind of wood?

I don’t have any exotics but I would be happy to send you a care package of stuff that I have. (Osage Orange, Soft Maple, Walnut, Cherry, oak, both red and white….. if it fits it ships).

I don’t really know yet, Dallas. I think the box will end up being around 12” x 9” x 4”. I’m not picky on material. I’ll probably do some type of two tone design. Maybe a cherry/maple or walnut/maple. Thanks for your offer.

Hi, I’m in Louisville and buy my lumber from Roger Bonesteel in Sellersburg, IN. He will help you pick out the wood you want and is a 100% top notch guy to deal with (his wife too, she sells if he’s sawing). He has some short boards too, I just got some cherry in ~4’ length. Also got some curly Maple & curly Cherry to build some fancy boxes out of. Tell him Shawn sent you.

I have spoken to but not dealt with McInture Sawmill in Boston, Ky (I think). He would be closer for you and seems to be an equally good guy to deal with. Always has ads on Craigslist, search “lumber”.
