I’ve got the Jet wet sharpening unit. Got it all set up, watched the video numerous times, etc. The machine worked for about 20 minutes and now the motor just whines with no movement of the wheel. I’ve checked the nuts on the two sides holding on the stone and the strop but are tight – but not too tight. I checked the tension on the strop wheel thinking maybe I hit the adjuster and made it too tight, but it seems to be fine. The water level is just under the full line, etc.

The motor does not seem to be burning or anything – but it’s certainly not moving the wheel. I’m thinking that getting 20 minutes of use is not so good. I took the little utility drawer out and looked at the motor – for all the good that does – stared at it a bit—- still nothing. Imagine that. I don’t see any belts – I think it’s enclosed – but I would think there would be a belt – right????

Do you think I just got a lemon and I need to take it back – or is there something else I need to check before taking it back and looking like an unmechanical idiot? :-)

Thanks in advance.

Betsy,
Check that the strop wheel didn’t come off the motor shaft, which runs on the inside of the strop wheel.

Thanks Todd. The three little nubs fit into the holes on the metal wheel just fine. Good and snug.

Betsy,

I have the Tormek version but I think it is basically the same. Here is a crude drawing of what makes the wheels spin

The motor is inside the grinder housing but there is a shaft that extends from the motor thru the housing and rubs on the inside of the strop wheel. The weight of the motor causes friction to turn the strop/grinding wheel. See if the shaft is actually there and if it is turning. You may have to turn the grinder upside down to see everything. If the motor shaft is there and turning- move the motor a little to be sure it is rubbing on the inside of the strop wheel.

Lew – thanks for the explanation – I’ll look at that tonight. Thanks for taking the time to do the drawing – sure makes more sense now. I’ll let you know how I get along with it. Thanks again.

Betsy, I will will look at mine this evening and see if I can figure out why this would happen. This unit has been one of my better choices, (of course there are some things I would change. lol).

If you bought it new and set it up per their instructions why should you have to fix it. I say return it. They need to know that they sent out an inoperative product.

Hi Betsy,
I ran across this issue in another forum, you may want to take a look. Seems these things have problems.

I think it’s the same as yours. Good luck.

Thanks Shimmy. I’ll have to look at that issue. I’m inclined to take it back to Rockler and get a new one. But not sure. My dog got sick Tuesday and I ended up putting her down last night so I’ve not really put any time into this. I’ll let you know how I make out.

Thanks for the tip.

Sorry to hear about your dog.

Did Rockler replace it for you?
