I’ve been a member of LJs since I started woodworking almost 3 years ago now and for about a year I could not figure out why I couldn’t join SMC when I tried to register my usual username that I use on almost every forum wood related or not, mprzybylski. I eventually read somewhere that they only allow real names to be registered so I finally did about a year later in 2012. I don’t post there much really but I do browse from time to time and often only look at their classifieds forum. About two weeks ago a gentleman posted a bunch of big shop tools for sale as separate topics but he posted them as the same title which was hard to figure out what’s what. Someone made a comment that he should change the title to the actual tool he was selling so as to not cause confusion and I felt compelled to say “I agree, I had to click through the same items a few times because I didn’t realize which threads I had already read” or something to that effect.

To my surprise when I went to post I couldn’t so I asked why in their feedback forum. I was told only people who make a monetary contribution to their site can post in the classifieds forum which made me laugh but I just went about my business. Then today someone felt compelled to add to the fire for whatever reason. You can read the thread here: http://www.sawmillcreek.org/showthread.php?220376-Can-t-reply-in-classifieds

What a joke. On top of that as you can see in my reply someone edited it an hour later. What did they edit? I told the guy my money is just as green as his and if he chose not to sell to me he’s certainly entitled to do that and that I’ve bought/sold on the internet quite often as I’m from a younger generation that grew up on the internet and make a ton of online transactions, that was literally it. Sorry but I had to laugh at this whole affair, especially the editing of my post to remove that line. Some type of sense of entitlement over there…

Wow. That’s pretty weak on their part.

I don’t know why but I have had a hard time logging in to that website. I finally gave up. It just isn’t worth it to me.

Matt, I’m going to gloat. I’m proud to say I actually got booted from smc about 2 years ago. I invented a couple wood turning tools that are in my opinion pretty unique. Got into it with the same guy that last edited your post. He’s the owner, and didn’t like the idea that I might want to talk about my tools. I had no intention of trying to sell them to members unless asked, and then only through PM’s, but I suppose he thought I might post only to sell them. We had it out once before, and I suppose he had a long memory. I’ve been a member here for over a year, and no one has seen or paid any attention to my tools. It would have been the same there, but they have a need to be in control of posters.
Today, on another WT site, a future ex member of smc said they are going downhill fast. I believe it’s in mamagement and how they operate…
Matt, could you do a phonetic spelling of your last name???? Last time I saw a name like that, I had no clue. I’m glad as I would have been totally wrong. The actual word is a place name in Poland, Krzemonki or something close. The pronunciation is She Moinkee. Go figure.. ........ Jerry (in Tucson)

I joined that site about 10 years ago. I added my web site to my signature line and was quickly informed that no advertising was allowed for other sites. I informed them that my site was personal information with nothing to sell to anyone and there was no reason to remove it from my sig. line. My membership was deleted instantly for arguing with a moderator. I was a member of SMC for almost 12 minutes. ;-)

AlaskaGuy I really can’t tell if you’re being sarcastic or not but to pay $6 for the only forum I really care to participate in on that site and not be able to post otherwise is a bit odd to me. I can buy/sell tools using many other resources plus I can contact those sellers on that forum directly without replying to their posts so it’s not a huge deal which is why I just laughed it off.

There is great content on the site, especially in the neanderthal haven, however the website looks like it was made in the 1980’s and there are certainly some very opinionated people too. But theyve got Derek Cohen and Larry Williams….

Pshhy-bill-ski is about as close as I can put it :). A lot of the times telemarketers call me and start pronouncing it and I just say Smith and cut them off (or just hang up).

I had a good laugh over a respondent’s line: ” Not to mention that not many, I included, would pick a non-poster to buy/sell something from/to. I would rather deal with someone that has at least SOME history here. ” (i.e. SMC)

When I think of how well I’ve done with nameless, anonymous Ebay sellers, perhaps 200 times buying woodworking hand tools with hardly an issue, I would not consider SMC participation an essential qualifier.

If you like SMC, then that is OK. If you do not like their rules, then do not go there. It is a more heavily moderated forum which some like. That same background computer software is used on many different sites on all different types of subject.

There used to be a big difference between LJ and SMC in terms of how they were moderated. LJ used to be wide open for any and all comments and that has been changed to a significant degree.

Personally, I do not buy from those who are just posting on a forum to sell stuff. I would rather buy from someone who is active on a forum and not just out to make a quick buck. Ebay is kind of like that but you and you can buy from people who have a good reputation with the number and quality of their sales. In addition, you have some protections against fraud. I really do not want to buy a $100 tool based upon someone’s anonymous post. Maybe, I miss some good deals and maybe I miss some problems.

The first thing one should when considering joining a a forum is read the rules. If you had there would have been no surprises. You obviously didn’t or you wouldn’t have tried to register with a fictitious name.

It all right here (requirements to join): http://www.sawmillcreek.org/announcement.php?f=7&a=16

That being said I find SMC to have very knowledgeable people who like to help. Myself I don’t use the classified ads at any site so that a non issue with me. If I did use the classified I don’t fine 6.00 a year a unreasonable. I don’t except everything in life to be free. Just because some websites offer free classifieds I wouldn’t expect them all to be free.

I have no problem that you don’t want to pay 6 bucks to access that forum. But I don’t think its quite right to bad mouth a website because you didn’t read the rules going in or that they have a fee.

Every website must have some kind of income to support its operations. And, there nothing wrong with making a profit. That’s what American business is all about.

I’m not sure where you got the notion that I expect everything in life to be free nor was I bad mouthing SMC because they charge $6 to post in the classifieds. As I’ve said twice now I just laughed it off and went about my business because I knew if there was something I really wanted I could just PM the seller and ask. The problem here is that a certain user felt the need to chime in after my query was already answered with an unwanted opinion as well as then a moderator modifying my post because I said my money is just as green as that users’.

In any case, there is a lot more that I can answer you with but I’m going to refrain for the sake of not turning this into a flame war. I’m not really the type to argue with an Internet personality on a forum because I know people hide behind computers and say what they will. I enjoy my time on LJs and would like to keep it that way. I was just venting a bit about another site and that is all.

If I misinterpreted you post I apologize. I agree no flame war needed.

I joined the site a couple of years ago just to log into see some pictures. Which I think is stupid to have to do. I knew after that it wasn’t a place for me. I feel I’m down to earth but that site seems to pretentious for me. I’m glad I don’t get on there I would be banned (I don’t deal with ignorance very well). Anyways LJ feels like I’m chatting with my friends ,seems better designed and has a good flow to it. Oh I don’t have to log in to see pictures here.
