Hi guys,
Just noticed yesterday. Steel City has upgraded their web site…
- All/most tools seem new
- Smaller selection

Anyone in the loop?
Was planning to buy the small planner.
Is it still available?

Looks like they have gone back to their original idea, with only Granite tops for the few pieces they are still carrying. Doesn’t look good to me for long term survival.

At the IWF yesterday I commented to my cohort that it looked like Steel City was going all granite. All their table saws and jointers (even the tiniest of jointers) and band saws had granite.

jacquesr, they still have a 15”, 3hp planer (steel tables) with helical carbide inserts. I don’t know if that’s the one you were looking at.

I tried purchasing a table saw last year but became very evident there were issues with supply, vendors, and more importantly Steel City itself. I contacted local Woodcraft (based on the site pointing them out as a vendor). Woodcraft contacted me and said they would love to help me find a new table saw and were sure they could outfit me with a Jet or Saw Stop model. Called a second vendor and they said they hadn’t sold the Steel City stuff in some time. So I contacted Steel City and they couldn’t really help except to say I could drive to “Chicago” to their place for a floor model or I maybe try a hardware store a few hours away that was a “vendor” but couldn’t tell me if they had product.

Lowe’s and HD could both order for me but they were the full price and not the spring/summer sale prices advertised by Steel City. Utter Guys appeared to be the only reliable source and price at the time.

Travish: all companies have the ups and down.
I saw some articles in which they were pretty clear about their challenges.
This is behind them now.
The new line up is a good proof I think.
Overall, the feedback I saw on their products and services was positive, which lead me to look more in depth into their product line.
My 2-cents
