This will probably sound like a very strange issue but I brought a handcarved giraffe statue back from Tanzania and I just discovered a bug burrowing in or out of it. I’m not sure which way it was going and I can’t tell how deep the hole is. It’s hand-painted so the surface of the statue has to be handled very carefully. Is there someone that might have advice or information on how to fumigate wood products? Or other alternatives? I poured water into the whole to bring the bug to the surface so I could remove it with tweezers. I’m afraid if it came from the inside out there might be more….

I’m happy to provide a picture of the hole or bring the statue to someone in the DC area to look at it if that is possible.

Thank you,
Cheron

How big is the carving? Some photos may help.

It is roughly 12 inches high. I can take another photo when I get home of the full statue. This photo shows the leg and hole.

You can get a can of poison for it. The spray cans have a lot thin tube that you insert deep into the hole. Ask at your garden store or hardware store.

Dang! That looks like a big bug! If you heat the statue to 140 degrees F for several hours it will kill all the bugs. This temp SHOULDN”T hurt paint or glue.

What about sealing it in a Ziploc bag and placing it in the freezer for a week or so?

And yes it really was a big bug that experienced the inside of my garbage disposal after I flushed him out with water!

I don’t think the freezer will kill all bugs (But the oven will!)
