I am about to finish a black walnut crib and I need some help with the finish. I want to use an oil finish but it needs to be safe just in case the kid starts chewing the crib some day.

I knew I read about this before so I went to my finishing bible (Understanding Wood Finishing by Bob Flexner). I’ll will write what is stated in his book. “The safety of finishes for food or mouth contact is a non-issue, kept alive by certain woodworking magazines and implied by some manufacturers who label their wiping varnishes ‘salad bowl finish.’ In fact, all clear finishes are safe for contact with food or with someone’s mouth once the finish is fully cured. The rule of thumb is thirty days, but it can less if the finish cures in warm conditions.” He goes in to detail in his book to dispel the myth of be poisoned by finishes but I didn’t include that. I have personally met and talked with Bob and believe me the man knows his stuff. I would trust the above statement totally but what you do is your choice.

I believe every thing that is said above, however, if your spouse asks you is the crib going to be safe for the baby and you start going into what Bob Flexner says about all finishes being non toxic once they are cured you might get some argument and rolled eyes at the very least. But if you say, “I used salad bowl finish”, it will be the end of the conversation. Oh yes, and the baby will definitely be chewing on the crib.
