Topic tags/keywords: chuck chuck key jacobs

I’m looking for a chuck key for a Shopsmith Jacobs 3326 drill chuck. This is off an old Shopsmith built back in the 50’s, maybe a pre-Mark V vintage. Shopsmith has not sold this chuck for years and does not stock chuck keys for it. The Jacobs web site says the K32 key should fit, but it does not. The chuck has a 1/4 inch pilot, the same teeth count as a K32 but the diameter of the teeth area needs to be smaller.

Any ideas?

The chuck & key combos often appear on ebay. I just got back from vacation and I might have a spare key only, but will need a couple of days to check. Another great source for SS stuff is: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Shopsmith10ERusers/ or http://www.ssug.org/index.php

If you don’t have success, send me a private message in a few days to remind me to look around. -SST

Thanks for the feed back. The new Shopsmith keys won’t work. The only chuck key that I’ve found that comes close a Jacobs K30. It’s close, but not an exact fit. Some of the Shopsmith chucks with the same model number work with a Jacobs K32. Maybe mine was rebuilt at some point…who knows. I’ve decided to sell the chuck and purchase a new one from Shopsmith directly.

I just bought one of these for the 3326 I bought off of eBay. Our local Lowes carries Jacobs replacement chuck keys. You need #30251 for $2.97 . . . it fits perfect. I searched Lowes website before actually going to the store and had the number in hand. If you don’t have a Lowes locally, I think they can be ordered online. Hope this helps.

I found out why I was having a problem with locating a chuck key. Turns out that the sleeve on the chuck was out of position. I took the chuck apart and put it back together and now the Jacobs K32 chuck key works like a champ.
