Topic tags/keywords: oak finishing question

Working on some oak pieces and even though I used timbermate as a grain filler – I still get areas that didnt stain. mostly dots but noticable. I am using GF waterbased Enduro Poly and am wondering if I tint that with waterbased stain – will that help hide my defects or cause more problems. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Thanks

Your predicament is generally caused by some form of contamination either in your preparation prior to staining or possibly even before you purchased the lumber.
Is this occurring on any of your other pieces of the same lumber?
I have noticed, especially when working with Quarter Sawn White Oak, the ‘ray flecks’ are harder and will not absorb stain.
Without pictures of your problem areas, it is hard to tell what might be the problem. Are you able to post pictures of the surface in question?
