I have the itch to make some calls. My family has a powermatic lathe, I am not sure of the model though. I am wonder if the Morse taper madrel will work with that lathe. If so would you go with the #1 or #2? If it won’t what would be everybody’s recomendation for something that is easy to use for a beginer?

I don’t know anything about making duck calls, but if #1 & #2 refer to the taper size then your Powermatic is probably a #2 but you should measure or check the manual just to be on the safe side. Measuring is easy, taper sizes can be found with a quick google search.

Never known a PM lathe headstock spindle to come with anything but MT-2, so yes any MT-2 pen mandrel will work. Would buy a mandrel from same place buying call kits & accessories initially.

I would check that lathe to see if it comes with a small tool rest less than 12”. At one time they came with large & small tool rest.

Thanks again,
Matt

MT2 dimensions are small end = .572” (9/16”+), large end = .700” (11/16”+). Length of taper = 2.5”. Hope this helps…....... Jerry (in Tucson)
