West coast folks- I am getting ready to paint a closet shoe rack. I would like your opinions on kelly moore paints vs ben moore paints. I am leaning towards kelly moore and have been quite happy with there products in the past. Thanks

I bought a lot of [five gallon buckets of] Kelly Moore for a business out of Olympia, Washington. Before that, I was in Wenatchee, Washington, and worked for a paint contractor who bought hundreds of gallons of Benjamin Moore, which we applied. Both were excellent products, as is Sherwin Williams and other, perhaps, lesser known paint brands.

Of course, each company has quality levels. As such, if you stay with their better quality paint, I don’t think you’ll go wrong, as they say. That even applies to the big box places [but only the high end stuff, in my opinion).

Keep in mind, each company sells its lemons too. I consider many of the exterior finishes that are passed off as fence finishes and such that leave a hard, clear finish to be an example, regardless of who makes it.

When I bid a job, I included paint cost and, essentially, told the homeowner, so it would benefit them to choose the best paint they could get, since it was part of the bid. I explained the advantages of quality paint with more binders and pigments, of course. They liked that and it helped me get the bid. In reality, it was to my benefit to coax them into buying good paint, since it went on better and held up better.

Have your say...
