Topic tags/keywords: resource plane

Rust Hunt was rather short today, short of funds. Had about $5 to shop with. One stop. Had a lot of beatup tri squares @ $2 each…..pass

A cardboard tray full of planes @ $5 each. Stanley #81…...nasty, been left outside too long, might have a decent blade, but that was about it…pass. Spotted amongst the JUNK planes, mostly #5s a worth #4 and a Stanley #5 that was missing everything ahead of the cutter…..a Millers Falls #14. INtact, mainly surface rust

One little chip near the toe. $5?? Ok, tried to talk it down a bit….nope, still $5..Ok, sold, I guess.

Will be tearing it down to just parts. and doing a type study. lots of brass to shine up.

Frog is black, not red. “Tool Steel” at the top of the iron? A THICK redish finish on the INTACT wood handles.

Will start the clean up after while. Might be worth the $5…..

Sounds like a fun time out for $5, so I call it a win.

well, all things aren’t quite what they seem.

Got the base all cleaned of rust, had a little trouble in one spot, as it tore the paper on the sander

That black line is a crack! It goes around and into the mouth…..and stops there. Went ahead and cleaned the rest of the plane’s parts. Brass shined up, scrape the dried concrete off the tote, bolts cleaned of rust. Very little down to the iron, though. Just a derusting. Didn’t even try to sharpen it up. Put all the pieces back in their places, adjusted the frog a bit, and tried it out

No clicking, crack didn’t get any worse. It even made a shaving or two.

Might go back, and sharpen the iron. may clean the finish up on the handles, if I don’t just strip them down. This is a Type 4 Millers falls No. 14 Or, just a Five Dollah Jack plane….

Sole even can out nice, haven’t check for flatness, yet ( flatness? On a JACK PLANE?)

Doesn’t seem to rock any, though. Crack is just on one side of the mouth, too. Yep, will have to “baby” this one a bit, but it might just do…...for $5…

Wow… Five bucks? I’d do that all day long, if given the opportunity! Nice grab!!
hoping somebody with a MIG welder comes forward with his input on repairing cracks…
