I came home yesterday to find the owner of our house cut down a tree in the front yard. I always look at trees that are cut down to see if I can get any usable wood out of it. It seems that most trees can be used for something other then firewood. I have no idea what kind of tree this is but its my understanding you can tell by the leaf. So I have attached two pictures of the tree.

From a branch that was cut down a few weeks ago.

From yesterday.

Looks like a Bradford pear to me. Fast growing and weak. Chances are the owner thought it would blow down like one of mine did a week or so ago.n These were developed by some arborists to be very fast growing decorative trees for subdivisions. In my area they are all over. I don’t know of anyone who uses lumber from them but a friend told me that it is great for turning, especially fine detailed things like Christmas ornaments.

I’m not sure if that’s Bradford pear or not, but if it is I can attest to to the fact that it turns real nicely.

My first guess would be a pear also.
