How do I make Yellow Heart pop?

My buddy’s grandmother carved a chess set………large pieces, requiring 2 ½” squares.

Gonna be a big board.

Going to start with 6/4 walnut and rock maple for the squares and I would like to make the border really stand out and have decided Yellow heart would be good……………plus I want to use it again.

I used some in a cutting board a couple of Christmases ago, and the color just “laid there”.

Did not get any pop at all. Maybe it was the mineral oil I used, but sure did not stand out.

So, Yellow heart experts, what do I use to make the YH pop?

For that matter, I would obviously like the walnut and maple look great also, so finishing the entire board may be my real question.

Thanks, Bruce.

Last I read, finish yellowheart with your favourite oil based finish as you would with other woods that finishes well – but do a very fine final sanding to bring out its sheen and figure.
