I’m just curious if anyone here decided to try their hand at the annual veneer tech competition. The ad was in Woodshop News a couple months ago so I figured, why not? I’ve put in an entry and also convinced my former employer to enter that organ facade project I recently posted on this site.

Just so no one is confused, the Veneer Tech rules permit anyone involved in the project to enter. Remmert Studios designed that organ facade so it’s legit for them to submit the entry even though my company engineered and built it.

The item I entered is under my name since I built it but someone else did the design work. Even though I do a lot of design, I also enjoy figuring out how to build things other people throw at me.

Can’t wait for August! There are only eleven entries in the architectural category and one of them has to be a winner. Even if my name isn’t on that organ, it’s still good to finally start getting my work into the competitions.

Definitely doing this again next year.

You’ll have to do a bit of searching to spot out the projects.

Apparently no one else on this site made the attempt but since the results of the Veneer Tech contest are in I’ll necro this thread and give everyone the scoop. The judges awarded my entry with honorable mention.

This year I only had a week to work with the designer and build the entry item so all things considered, I’m satisfied with the results. Next year however, I’ll try to get an earlier start and go after the grand prize.

The video of the winning entries plus the Cabinetmaker FDM article are linked below.

The glasses look nice. Is there a how-to anywhere on how to do that? I could use some new glasses.

I’m not good enough with veneer yet to be entering anything.

Well done. I have been collecting stuff to teach myself
more about veneering. I do have my eye on the
veneer tech contest actually.

Great Job!! There’s some outstanding pieces there. You should feel proud of yourself for getting Honorable Mention!!

@ Loren

Hope to see your entry next year.

Several people have posted how-to articles but everyone makes them a little different. The easiest method for someone that wants to make just one pair is to buy a cheap pair of plastic frames and scavenge the hinges and lenses then copy the shape.

I haven’t bothered to post our techniques because we’re equipped with a lot of specialized machinery (lasers, cnc, veneer cutters, etc.) that most people will never have access to. There are literally dozens of videos and articles out there and I simply watched a bunch then put together a process that worked best with our equipment.
