Topic tags/keywords: question wood veneer yard sale

Well over the holiday weekend I was up and Holland MI and stumbled across a garage sale that a former woodworker was having. He was holding on to most of his better tools still but had some great smalls. I picked up a pauduke drawer handle and a bunch of veneers and a 1”x10”x6’ board of poplar, 10$ For the lot.

There are 20 of these burl veneers unsure of the species. Perhaps walnut?

1 of these no idea

2 of what appears to be mahogany.

1 of these not sure either

About 4 pieces of what I’m guessing is some type of figured walnut. Back row left and middle.

Another 4 pieces of figured walnut.

This is a pic of the whole lot.

So how do you think I scored? When I asked how much he said 10$ , which seemed more than fair so I didn’t bother haggeling. Also any help with identification would be great.

I kind of looks like Koa to me. What ever it is, for $10 you did well!

Walnut, mahogany; no idea about the first one.

It’s always a guessing game when you get burled or highly fiquered wood many look similar ,The first one could be burled walnut ? #2 no guess #3 I agree that it’s probably mahogany #4 &5 maybe iron wood,or a type of ebony.
Here’s were I go to try and find what kind of wood I’m dealing with.

The first one is redwood burl. I have some myself.

I’m not at home now, so the best I could do was copy a photo I posted in this forum – Show Me Your Wood.

In the picture I copied and pasted, the redwood burl is on the left, English walnut in the middle, and makore on the right.

You can click on the link and view the photo better than what is copied here. It is post #7 in this forum. If needed I will post another photo of my redwood burl when I get home from work
