I was wondering if there is a length limit, say “x inches”, that a jointer with “y inches” of bed length can joint/face plane to get bows out of wood? The basis of my question is that if I have a 7’ long board with a bow in it, can it be face jointed straight with a 45” bed? I would think not since the begining of the board which has been jointed would be off the outfeed which might change the angle/pitch of the board approaching the knives? Am I way off base Thanks for any replies.

This is just a guess on my part (and I’m looking forward to see what the other LJs say) I’m saying that you should be able to do it. Like I said, this is a guess. don’t take my word for it. Looks to me like you’d eat up some wood, but eventually, you could join it.

It can be done easily. I often joint boards 12’ to 14’ long with a 6 1/2’ long jointer. The jointer tables Must be aligned very well and getting the technique down. I can go right to glue up or any other process with nice crisp straight edges.

Should be no problem if your joiner is will tuned up and you use the proper technique. Take light cuts to start with.

This can be done. I rely on a couple of roller stands place on infeed and outfeed side set to the exact height of the corresponding table. I just jointed a bunch of 10’ stock on a 49” jointer. Yes it would be much easier with a longer jointer bed, but not in the cards right now.

My method is to set the board on the jointer so that the height of the bow is directly over the cutters. Then joint the trailing end. Flip the board and do it again…and again…etc. Until the bow is barely nicked by the cutters. Then run the full length.

Works for me.

That’s a good idea Gene.
