Topic tags/keywords: question cedar identification

I have four boards pictured here that I think are of the same wood. I got them from somebody on Craigslist who was clearing up his later father’s garage. He thought it was Cedar.

Now, I hope it is Cedar, because I would love to use it for an outdoor project. This storage bench as from Wood magazine April/May 2005 (#162), or something like it.

Sorry if I went overboard with the pictures :) Thanks in advance for any help!

All boards are 3/4” thick when measured. The largest board is 10” wide and 10’ long.

Cheers,
-Ganesh

Here are the four boards:

Board 2:

Board 3:

Excellent photo’s Ganesh. You didn’t go overboard with the pic’s at all….I wish more wood id inquiries would follow your lead!

Unfortunately it’s not Cedar, It’s Cherry(north American).

Cherry. Pick up a board of cedar. Now pick up what you have. Should be a huge difference in weight.

Wow, such a unanimous response! You folks are awesome!

Thanks a lot! I am happy it is Cherry, but it felt a little lighter than I thought it would feel. I’ve been handling red oak recently, so maybe it feels too light to me. I did pay for the boards. I helped clean and collected a whole bunch of stuff from the garage for $200 – neither of us knew if it was more or less than their worth.

Now, I can actually make something with Cherry without spending money :)

Cherry, that light sapwood distinction looks exactly like some material I milled last night.

Kind of ironic that this was obviously cherry just by a quick glance at the first picture…but you have about 10 of the best pictures I’ve even seen in these types of threads. I love the threads with one blurry pictures of a piece of weathered wood.

LOL, AlaskaGuy :) Thanks again everyone!

Now, I hope I come up with something harder to id next time to “Stump the chumps”, as Click & Clack from CarTalk put it ;)

I have never seen such a unanimous opinion on LJ, someone better write this down. :)
