I’m thinking about my bench project constantly and I have yet another vise question. I bought a regular front vise like this …
Photobucket
I may add another vise to this bench in the future but right now I’m going with one. So, if I’m only mounting one, should I put it on the front or the tail. They say it will take 24” jaws if tail mounted and my bench base is 24” deep. I’m not sure why it can be larger on the tail but that’s what the instructions say (18” is the max anywhere else on the bench unless it’s the full width of 24” ... confusing)

I’m leaning toward putting it on the tail for now. Then in the future adding a sliding tail vise and throwing this on the front. Good plan???

Put it on the front. The 24” dimension is too much in my opinion as it will rack.

FWIW, if you can get a quick release do it as it is much faster and easier to use in a lot of instances.

Thanks for the advice. I did end up putting the vise on the front actually. I had misread the instructions at the time; the 24” was only for the larger version of the vise in the picture above. I bought the smaller and was able to get 15” jaws out of it. If you care to see it, here is a link to my blog on the bench build process.
