Topic tags/keywords: humor

I certainly would not stop addressing people by their username just because there is an underscore or numbers in it…. if somebody prefers to be called somnam327 then I will address them by that name, but doing so takes away much of the closeness and informality that helps make LJ forums what it is.

That said, I have a really simple request to anybody who uses a code name for no other reason than they simply haven’t changed it yet. Please go to your profile and change your “Real Name” to a real name. Doesn’t even have to be your real name, just something easier to address you by. Names like gaterhead, splinterjunkie, keninohio, shorty, 1thumb….. are all much friendlier than, for example, ovsq78 or vn_2020.

If not that, maybe add a real or nick name to your signature. It sure would make it a lot easier to address you when posting.

Thanks!

UPDATE: this topic was titled “Real Names, Please :)” but what I meant was real sounding names, or more friendly NICK mames.

UPDATE AGAIN: I didn’t mean real names like mine is my actual “real name”. I meant names that don’t appear to be random letters and numbers and underscores typed with elbows while breathing too much sawdust and…. well…. I guess I’m just not good at clarifying what I meant to say.

UPDATE AGAIN AGAIN: Changed the title to “What does your nickname (handle) mean?” because that’s the direction this topic has taken. Add yours and/or read others… some interesting stories here. *

My real name is Charles but helluvawreck suits me better. I’m 63 and going on 80.

I wasn’t smart enough to know you weren’t suppose to use your real name when I first started on the internet, back in the 90’s right after Al invented it. Funny thing, it’s never been a problem for me to have used my real name (knock on wood…pun intended).

One of the benefits of being a female woodworker is that my very common first name is almost never already taken as a username on sites like this…. :)

Ted, forgive me for being daft – but how can I see someone’s real name if they have added it to their profile?

I checked out Helluvawreck’s profile, or example, but don’t see any indication of where his real name would show up (if indeed he did publish it on his profile?). Mine (Josh) has been added to my profile.

J, the real name is the one you see, for example j_dubb. I generally just call you J or dubb as it just seems friendlier. Some members here, however, have a really difficult to use username and never bothered to change their “real name”, while defaults to their username, or mention their name in their signature.

Actually, if you look right under my post you will see that I put my real name on every one of my post.

Hoosier is a nice friendly name. I’ll never remember Denny so it’a nice to meet ya, hoosier :)

What I’m really referring to here is usernames like dnyind0331. It’s just really awkward addressing people with names like that.

More people know me as Mosquito or ‘Mos’ than by Chris; it’s my internet handle all over. Sort of a “Pen Name” if you will.

My real name is Theodore but nobody ever calls me that. I like Ted. I wanted Elizabeth but it was already taken.

I agree with Mos. I’ve used this handle for a long damn time, probably 12 years or so.
