Topic tags/keywords: resource question custom orders turning

I hope I’m asking this in the right place, but I couldn’t tell. I make toys and some of the things I used to be able to get easily are no longer available, while some of the things I need are no where to be found. I don’t have many power tools and I have a disability that makes it completely impractical for me to use many of them anyway, so I have to get most of my parts pre-made and then finish my toys from there.

I order things like wood cubes and cut-outs in bulk. I need to get things fairly inexpensively, so that my final prices aren’t astronomical. For some things I can find local woodworkers to make them for me but I’ve found that consistency and good craftmanship aren’t that easy to come by. I have a really great box maker right now, but he stays pretty busy so I don’t like to bug him too much. I’m hoping you guys might be able to point me in the right direction for a couple of things…

1. I need unfinished wood-turned hardwood dreidels, shaped like these:
Whoever was making these stopped and I can’t seem to find them anywhere anymore I believe these are about 2.25” by 1” (I can get exact measurements). If someone could turn out something similar in bulk they may be able to get a contract with my supplier, as my supplier was selling these to a lot of people before they stopped being made. I need a light colored hardwood with a nice smooth surface (definitely not oak), other than that I’m not picky. I just need the unfinished turned pieces. I would probably want to order 50 to 100 at a time.

2. I would like to find a wood top similar in size to the dreidel above, but cone shaped, with a flat round top, tapering to a point, with a handle in the center.

3. I need to find someone that can make compartment dividers for me out of some kind of thin wood. I’d want them for various things but to start with I need some to divide a rectangular tray into 24 equal compartments, each of which would hold a 1.5” cube… so the final assembled size would be about 1” tall and about 9.75” by 6.5” (give or take a little depending on how thick the dividers are).

If you guys could point me in the right direction I’d really appreciate it.

I googled ‘dreidel blanks’ and got a few hits, there were several options that may be what you are looking for.

Posting this in the ‘Sweating for bucks” forum may also get you a better response.

Most of the people with the dreidels listed are out of stock now and have told me they won’t restock, but one of my suppliers sent me elsewhere for some cubes the other day and that led me to a guy who still has a dreidel supplier and says his isn’t going anywhere, so hopefully I can get those as needed again.

I believe I found an alternative to the compartment tray I was needing, that I can make myself from craftwood and dowels, so I think I’m good on that one. I would still be happy to find someone that can do the spinning tops for me, though, and possibly some other items as well. I’ll check out the other forum you mentioned when I get a chance, thanks.
