Topic tags/keywords: black walnut san diego

Hi, a friend of mine has a storage unit filled with black walnut in San Diego. I would guess there’s at least 500bf… possibly 1000bf. He needs to sell it quick because he has to move his stuff out by the 20th. They are all flat sawn… there are some quarter sawn pieces I saw but not many. He’s planning on storing it at my place probably starting this weekend. He asked me to get as much money as I can but I don’t want my garage filled with black walnut so would anyone be interested in purchasing some/all at $5/bf? If there’s not much interest, I could go lower although I normally pay around $8/bf for black walnut here.
The lumber I saw (it was hard to see since there was so much and everything was so packed) was at least 6’ long and 5 to 14” wide, maybe a little wider.
He has a few other random species (I saw some purple heart, Paduuk, Wenge and Cherry) but I’m not sure if he wants to sell it.
I am in East County. Thank you for looking!

That sounds like a decent price to pay retail near me if it was in good condition (proper drying and storage seems to be everything). I’m on the east coast though, so I think prices are lower. Out there, that might be a great price. Good luck.

Kindlingmaker, I’m within driving distance, too. If only I had a jointer and a planer. And space to pile wood. Especially space….

Sorry to get people excited but most of the lumber was sold to one of my other friends at $8/bf. There is still going to be about 100 or so bf left and now he wants to sell for $8/bf. I’m planning on sitting on it for a few weeks to try to get him to lower the price.
And he now wants to sell all his other lumber but I’m going to sit on this because he keeps changing his mind and the price…. no sense in people getting excited over here only to be disappointed.

I’m in San Diego as well and have a custom cabinet shop in town. I build custom clocks for fun on the side and would be interested in finding out how old the exotics are cause I like to build with 50 to 125 year old wood. If this lumber fits that era please pm me. Thanks

I do have some white oak I would sell. I believe these are about 10 years old. The logs were at the bottom of a lake then pulled up and milled. It was air dried for a couple years (I think it was 3 or 4 years) then kiln dried for a month. It then sat in a garage for 7 years. I have used a lot of it and it seems much harder or denser than normal white oak. Let me know if you’re interested.

am interested but, just found a 5000sf building here that is full of 50 to 75 year old lumber of all types (all hardwood) as well as a truck made out of all oak (1905 I think) anyways he is giving me the pick of whatever I want. Can’t believe I fell into this :) so thanks

Jeff

Wow, where do you find a deal like that? I’m jealous. I would buy some but I havn’t had much time to woodwork lately, which is why I’m selling this white oak… Part of my “special” stash that I’ve been saving.
