Topic tags/keywords: planer

I used to have a Ridgid 13” planer. I replaced it with the DeWalt DW735 recently. I discovered though that mounting the Wixey DRO on the DW735 isn’t as straight forward as on the typical lunchbox planer. I didn’t want to start drilling holes in the height scale on the planer so I had a replacement made. You can see it installed on the planer in the following picture. It’s made of stainless steel and was cut with a water jet.

It’ll require some short screws to mount the DRO’s bracket but it will securely mount the DRO to the machine. It also allows the DRO to be adjusted vertically to align the bottom of the bracket with the bed of the table.

Here’s a picture of it next to the original.

I have one extra bracket that I’d be interested in selling if someone was interested. I don’t see that there’s a good place to advertise it here so I’m not really advertising it in this thread. (Can one post ‘for sale’ ads in the swap area?)

As some good old boy used to say: “Neat but not gaudy.”

How did you find a shop that would make 2 pieces only?

It helps to know the machinist and to approach him when he wasn’t incredibly busy. I wasn’t even looking for something this fancy. The shop specializes in one offs, custom and short production runs, too. they are especially good with stainless steel.

Here are a couple of pictures of the DRO installed. I have to adjust the height of the display unit yet but I didn’t feel like heating up the shop last night.

Photobucket

I used 10-32×1/4 machine screws and matching oval nuts to attach the DRO assembly to the new bracket. It was a cinch to adjust the height of the assembly to match the planer bed. Much better than using foam tape. You can see the oval nut in this picture.

I’m actually tremendously interested, and this is a superb fabrication for the Dewalt planer. I am interested in getting this planer down the road, which is why I’m trying to avoid this thread, cause it makes “down the road” shorter… and I still need to get more funds… lol. I’ll definitely consider finding a place that would be able to make one of those replacement parts when the time comes – you have shed bright light on the matter.

nice job on the scale mount. how does it perform?

Well, the DRO performs very well. I didn’t have time to run the planer last night after installing it though. No reason it shouldn’t work as well as it did on my Ridgid planer. The stainless pieces is a direct replacement for the orignal. The ends were copied from the anaolg scale. I don’t expect to find any problems with it.
