Byrd Tool Shelix cutterhead for Dewalt planer DW735

Has anyone used something like this before. I plane down a lot of old oak and hickory and I am looking for an alternative to flat blades. They don’t seem to last very long with this lumber. It has great reviews, but not very many, so I am skeptical. Any advice?

Fellow LJer JL7 has done this conversion and is very pleased with it. You can search his blog entries, he posted about it some time ago.

I Installed that head in my DW735 a couple years ago. Highly recommended. It is pretty easy to install and works as advertised.

It does slow down the planing process. The cutter head seems to be a slightly smaller diameter, which effectively limits the depth of cut to 1/16”. I find that for anything wider than 4” I need to limit the cut to 1/32” or less to prevent the motor from bogging down. Despite that, I wouldn’t go back to the old head.
