Hello,
New to the hobby and am looking for a place to get reclaimed barn wood around Chicago. My wife is really enthusiastic about reclaimed barnwood. I have had some luck on Craigslist, but am finding it is 2-3x, even 4x ($2/bf,-3.75/bf for pine or fur) as expensive as the big box stores. Does anyone know of a reasonable source? I live in the northern suburbs, near Gurnee.
Thanks!

There is an outfit called G.H. Woodworking and Sawmill in Wauconda that has a good selection of barnboard. Apparently, they are in the process of moving to a new location, so I’m not sure of their current status. I found this on Facebook. https://www.facebook.com/ghwoodworking

BTW, the cost on barn board is high because the labor needed to remove boards, remove nails, resharpen tooling from missed nails!, a high waste factor and limited supply in this market. Consider that you are paying for unique and one of a kind versus commodity.

Thanks for that insight. I have come to understand that a bit more from my research throughout the day. I not come across GH Woodworking yet so I appreciate the tip.
Thanks!

I have tons of barnwood and old historic flooring materials for sale, with one teardown coming in late July, and also a 600 sq. ft. bundle of 1×6 pine flooring which is 130 years old from a historic building in Oak Park. Range of items includes huge hardwood hand hewn beams, to tin sheets, and many smaller harwood beams such as 6” x 4”, and up to 10” x 14”. The barn products can be powerwashed or raw. Anyone interested in particular items can email me. Sawmill, resaw, planing, and shaping services are available.
