I wanted to use this electric motor (240v ac) to make a disc sander.

There are four wires coming out of the motor: white,red,yellow,blue and black, I hope somwone wil be able to tell me how to wire it up.

Hard to say without the motor brand or what it came off of. 2 wires are probably for a capacitor and a different combination of the 3 other wires for rotation direction. I know that doesn’t help.

What is the rotational speed ? It shouldn’t be more than 1750 for a disc sander.

-- BELT SANDER: Used for making rectangular gouges in wood.

The motor was from an air conditioner blower unit.
Made in China.
Voltage 220vac Series: 4
Power 13W
Current : 0.21 amp
Capacitor: 1uF 450V

No speed indicated

Below is the circuit diagram.

I managed to get the motor working.

The unknown component was a thermistor but i removed it

The starting capacitor, 2 uF 400 vac, was connected across the white and red wires. The 230vac line was connected to the ends of the white and red wires.
The motor spin when power was switched on.I did not test the yellow and blue wires. As WhyMe said it could be for different speeds,

Now I could go ahead with what I had intended to do

I’ve played around with these a little, I suspect the black, blue and red are your different speeds, or more accurately different torques. Much like a ceiling fan motor or an air handler blower motor, they can spin at full speed with no load, the speed is reduced only when the load is applied. To check which speed (or torque) each of the wires represents, you could try all of them, the one that accelerates the rotor the slowest would be your slow speed and so on and so forth.

I could try that tomorrow. I hope the circuit breaker would not trip.

I doubt it would, these motors are generally designed to be very efficient, and don’t spin too fast so if it provides adequate torque it wouldn’t be too fast for a disc sander.

On my smaller hvac motors, red is low speed, blue is high; and they spin at slower speeds with our without load but of course yours may be different.

I think motors designed for furnace use are best repurposed as some type of air handler or air filtration unit. You might consider that by building a box and using a decent furnace filter to clean your air.

bigblockyeti : I was a bit apprehensive but the circuit breaker did not trip.
Rick M: In my case white gave the fastest speed. Bl ue medium speed and red needed a slight manual spin to run.It also gave the slowest speed.

dhazelton: I am an avid collector of all sorts of motors and I dreamed a lot about using them ! You gave me a good idea. In my small workshop I used an air conditioner compressor fan to cool the work area.
