Topic tags/keywords: addiction

BECAUSE…. (someone pointed out earlier this month that he doesn’t label his tool drawers because it helps keep his brain cells working; sorry that I can’t remember who that was)...

SO… I am NOT addicted; I am just exercising my brain by trying to remember each of our members, their stories, their blogs, their projects, their comments, and the other little VITAL tidbits of information that I gather from reading every message. And to keep my brain exercised, well I just HAVE to log on several times a day and avoid mundane tasks that turn my brain to mush, such as doing laundry, washing dishes, and vacuuming!

My name is David and I AM addicted! I even brought some woodwork with me on holiday (more on that later) and I have been checking in LJ a couple (OK more than a couple) of times a day – just to see what is new.

And we all do know about MS Debbie! LOL Not addicted? Our Life Guide, Intrepid Traveler and blossoming woodworker? No, clearly not addicted!

I was looking at a storage room in my office and deciding if I could fit a lathe in it. I’m currently designing my tool cabinet that sits above my bench to house the iMac I bought for the shop…slid out keyboard, dust contaiment with the computer as a centrepiece of the cabinet. But I’m not addicted at all. Nope… 1113 posts in 52 days.

My name is Erik and I’m a Lumberjockaholic. I’ve been intoxicated with sawdust and tools now for 2200 days and I’ve just been informed that my affliction is terminal…THERE IS NO CURE for Lumberjocks or woodworking.

Me, addicted to another damn thing? I am sitting in my sister-in-law’s kitchen awaiting the wedding tomorrow and I have logged on three times today and thrice yesterday. My greatest hope would be that there are no twelve-step groups forming for this addiction.

Hi!
My name is Lee.
I have been addicted to woodworking, off and on, for 55 years.

I gave up alcohol in 1978.
I gave up cigarettes in 1984.

I hope to always remain addicted to wood, women (well, one woman) and song.

I love the smell of sawdust, and the clacking of my keyboard. But I can quit anytime. I just don’t want to!

LOL…yeah I should be sleeping….Got windows to install tomorrow and I want to do some work on my chair. But I don’t have an addiction….just sitting up with the rest of the house asleep…..working on my CRT tan, bleary eyed but still clicking away. I’d go out to my shop but I’d probably cut myself.

I know it now…it 2 AM, I can’t sleep, and what do I do, I log on. Yes, I’m an LJ Junkie. I heard once that the first step to healing is admitting you have a problem, but there lies the problem, I don’t have a problem, no problem at all… Its not a problem…(nervious twitch)....no..not a problem.(beads of sweat froming on my forhead) Even if I did have a problem, which I don’t have, it wouldn’t be a problem, would it?

Boy, I realllly need to get back in the shop!

Sawdust… I had to share that one with Rick .. made me laugh right out loud.
the CRT tan also made me laugh loudly.
Rick’s thinking that I didn’t get enough sleep last night. And, no, I wasn’t on the computer!!

Here is my 12-step CHAT-aholic program that I developed many years ago (ok.. many, many years ago, now). Perhaps it will help someone here that DOES have a problem—which isn’t me. I’m not addicted, I’m exercising my brain…

12 Step Chat-aholic Program

1. Admit that you are addicted to Chat.
2. Chat with someone about it.
3. Acknowledge that there is a Higher Power.
4. Thank the Higher Power for Chat.

o.k. so it is not a 12-step program…....
but the 4-steps works for me !

O-I-C-U-R-1-2.
Seems there are a fair proportion of folks here who have substituted woodworking for other, well, less productive addictive pursuits. Good for us!

New benchmark for woodworking addiction. Went to the wedding today, Hawaiian theme, outdoors. Trees which made the background to the vow-taking were box-elder. They had had a limb fall from the big trees several weeks ago. I managed to score two log sections of box-elder with the red stain running through the heartwood. Can’t even take time off from the wedding to look for new lumber!

Now I need to consult with you turners to figure out how to process the hunks so I can turn some bowls revealing the illusive vivid red streaks.

It would appear that the list is generated as a ratio of posts/days of membership. This doesn’t utilize any of the “sweaty-palm” indices of addiction: for example log-ons/day, time spent working up submissions prior to posting, number of postings one wishes to make/number of postings; visting The Wood Whisperer, Matt’s Basement Workshop, Woodtalk On-line or Furnitology Productions in lieu of logging on to LJ (attempting to “control” or moderate the addictive behavior).

What the heck, anything that doesn’t have me as a poster-child for LJ addiction or subject of one of the stories in the back of the Big Book of Lumberjock Addiction (”Modems, Morado and Marquetry”) is gravy as far as I’m concerned!

I don’t, I don’t have a problem. When those you love, and love you in return are asking you to use your -non- addiction to help them. Then how can it be called bad.

But then again those who use drugs, have other druggies asking them for some.

So maybe it’s true.

Say it isn’t so. Say it isn’t so!

an addiction is normal behavior done in abnormal proportions, according to the DSM4. Diagnostic manual used by the (helping) professionals.

Now it apears that our behaviors are not done in excess as they apear to be the norm of those who (use) this site therefore they are NOT excessive.. they are the norm… Or am I just rationalizing….. Oh noooooo…
