Hi all….Anyone here ever try using one of those plastic (I think) cutting boards from Wall/K-Mart for a zero clearance insert? I’d like to make one or two for my Unisaw and was wondering if that material had been tried before.

Any other ideas on materials to use is also certainly welcome!!

Thanks in advance :o)

a1Jim – yer gonna laugh, but I’ve never used MDF, for anything. I know nothing about it but I know allot of LJs put to use for allot of things. Does it come in 1/2 inch?

Thanks Jim. I’m already on the HD site and found it in 1/2 in.

Jim, MDF used to be cheap.

Don’t know what it costs by you, but it has gone up dramatically here in NJ in the last few years.
Anyway, like Jim says mdf is a good material, I put formica on both sides then rabbet the bottom edges so it is lower than the top. Then I put screws in, or you can try the hot glue method.

I did buy a cutting board at HF for the purpose, but have never used it as I had so many blanks I made, I have not used up my MDF, formica blanks yet.

Try it and let me know how you like the cutting board.. :-)

I’ve made a number of ZCI’s out of MDF and they worked well. However, I recently made one out of a piece of Corian I had laying around the shop. Drilled it and tapped for leveling screws and it works great.

I have made many inserts using laminate flooring. Works great. Stiffer and harder than MDF.

Have your say...
