A friend gave me a small stack of this olive burl veneer and the moment I saw it I knew what it was destined to become, not so much the object but the marquetry image. I have never had a piece of veneer speak this clearly to me. It shouted.

The project is in the finishing stages now and will show up in a few days but I thought before I reveal it I would post this image and see if anyone else sees the same thing in it that I did.

1) What do you see in this veneer?
2) Was it immediately obvious or did it come to you after contemplation?

As we are all different and have different interests and thought processes I think it will be interesting to see what others find in this piece. That said, I’m almost positive some will see what I did.

Thanks .

Paul

Upper right a birds head

Left side, lower middle reminds me a a little doggy we had.

Top middle, scary old man, ghoulish.

Center, right-middle, scary women.

Lower right, another women face, maybe calling that dinner is ready, I’m hungry.

Will look to see what you see. I wonder, is their is a correct answer for a Rorschach test?

Yep, a map. And that was before I read the other responses.

Edit: Oh wait. Are those Ives I see? This must be Burl Ives.

I see a map of the Mediterranean with France and Spain to the west and Italy to the east with the islands and ocean currents .
You being a sailor I can see you having fun working with this beautiful and fascinating piece of olive burl veneer ,even the wood type fits this area of the world .

Thanks for the preview tease and the good fun . Klaus

Discounting the face on the lower left side – I see a huge breasted eagle. The breast takes up most of the burl and the beak, eye, and head are at the top. Came to me after about 20 seconds.

I instantly saw an old map. coastlines, water currents, Islands…

And your a boat builder and sailor, so….that might have influenced me just a bit.

I’m typically not a big fan of most burls, but that’s a nice score.

I can’t explain why but what first came to my mind was Michelangelo’s Creation of Adam from the Sistine Chaoel.

Looked like a campfire blowing up smoke at first. However after some thought an old timey map would be perfect.

An elephant with trunk raised. Jumped right off the screen. Can’t wait to see what you saw and created with it. You never fail to amaze.
