What does the adjuster nut on a low angle block plane do?

I’ve just acquired a Lie-Nielsen low angle block plane (standard model, mouth not adjustable).

This is the diagram they supply:

The instructions say:

Slightly loosen the pressure of the cap and advance or retract the blade. Tighten the spinwheel. Do not overtighten. You should be able to adjust the blade after loosening the spinwheel about a quarter turn.

That is pretty straight forward, but I’m left wondering what the “adjuster nut” adjusts – no mention of it anywhere. Can you clue me in?

The depth of cut of the blade. Advancing the adjuster makes the blade advance in or out of the mouth.

It moves the blade in and out allowing for a less or more aggressive (thicker) bite to be taken with the blade. Generally effective planing is a balance of the thickness of the cut and the amount of material needing to be removed and the effort to do so. A thinner slice requires less effort but necessarily removes less material requiring more strokes over the area to remove sufficient wood to establish the desired level of flatness.

So is the “spin wheel” for coarse adjustment and the “adjuster nut” for fine?

You turn the spinwheel to untighten the mechanism then you adjust the blade depth via the adjuster knob and tighten back with the spin wheel. Be careful not to tighten that spin wheel too much or you will damage the plane.
