What is a common, popular, price efficient all around hardwood to use for general furniture making?

I would say maple. Could probably even use poplar.

Andrew,

Often it is based on what is available in your particular neck of the woods. You hear everyone talking about the eastern hardwoods—cherry, maple and walnut. These may not really be readily available in California. Or available at a price point you consider efficient.
