There’s been a bunch of stuff recently which centres around the difficulty in reading shortish comments on forum topics, and working out whether tongue was in cheek, tongue was stuck out, or no tongue was involved at all.

People can easily become confused.

Was that comment sarcastic, or straight up, or straight up offensive?

I try to deploy “old school” emoticons such as :-) – but I do wonder whether a lot of people know the language, and, to be frank, in this day and age it’s kinda low-tech and looks bad.

Just an idea.
How about letting us have emoticons available for dropping into our comments – many many fora do.

Perhaps if people could really easily throw a smiley face at the end of a comment, we’d all smile just a little more?

I agree… I use the text format version, but it would be nice to temper or give someone the tone of the message.

Yes. I like Emoticons also and it would be nice to have them.

BUT! Given the way the site is presently NOT Operating Would adding something else help speed up the site?

I agree that there are all to many Comments on here now with NO hint of whether they are being Sarcastic or not.

They could at least use the Old fashioned ;) or (Just Kidding) or …LOL… or a number of other ways to let everyone know what they mean.

Personally I think there a few on here that Deliberately DON’T do it. (Just My .02 Cents worth)

So what if some deviant decides to post a potentially confusing comment and then just adds to the difficulty of interpretation by slapping yellow smiley face after it. How would one proceed to decide if they should take offense or not?

It would seam to be a commonly used feature on most of the other sites I frequent. I like the one that flips the bird, it seams to help clarify things at times.

(I was not being serious. If guys/gals can’t figure out the nature of the post and are going to use a picture to do so, going to be just as many misunderstandings.)

I forgot about that. Yes! I see that done a lot on other Forums.

Common expression is “You know that Smiley Face after Your Comment? You didn’t really mean that did you?”

You might not be serious, but you are Correct and there WILL be just as many Misunderstandings.

I’d prefer an option to “like” comments or “rep” people who say things that are helpful. I think it would prevent some redundant comments like “Rick +1” and reward LJ’s who are helpful

Emoticons are the stupidest idea ever :-).

Once we get the current site issues taken care of I will address this type of stuff. I like the idea.
