Topic tags/keywords: salt pepper walnut

I have just recently bought 2 boards of a Walnut called Salt & Pepper Walnut. I bought them because they were unusual and to be honest, I enjoy buying great wood as much as making something with it. I just have a passion with things like Flame Box Elder, Beetle Kill Pine, Curly Mesquite and of course, Eastern Aromatic Cedar.

But back to this Walnut. Is anyone familiar with this Salt & Pepper variety? I can’t find any mention online and these 2 boards are the only ones I have ever seen. Does anyone know what causes this pattern or actually what it is? Maybe beetles or a fungus or is it a common thing that happens to some Walnut?

Let me know whatever you know about this, please. Thanks

Just looks like it has some sapwood from the photos. I like it, but most people don’t.

-- Nature created it, I just assemble it.

Monte has better eyes or glasses than I do. The pics are too small for me to make a judgement and I’m not smart enough to enlarge em.

Looks like sap and heart wood with some spalting or bug damage, but it’s hard to tell from those photos.

I don’t know why the pictures won’t enlarge. Let me try to download them again. The wood is really worth looking at.
