Mortise and Tenon?

Lets see, a tenon with all four sides having shoulders. Recess the mortise a bit to accept the shoulder, maybe 1/4” below the top of the mortise. Drill for at least one ( two would be better) dowel pins to go through the tenon. Use a little bit of draw bore to tighten things down. Dowels could match, or be a contrasting colour/wood.

If that stack of 2x’s is really the base, it’s way out of proportion with the 4×4. How’s the top gonna be attached?
