My wife and I have a booth at the Bayou City Art Festival in Houston at the end of March and also at the Woodlands Waterway Art Festival in April. Anytime we do shows out of town I like to find local lumberyards in the area that sell domestic and exotic hardwoods so I can do my “Kid in a Candy Store” shopping spree.

If any fellow Lumberjocks are familiar with any in this area please let me know. It is always fun to come back home after a show when there is new lumber in the van…much better than buying sight unseen…

Thanks…!

Greg, I am not familiar with that area, but you might be able to find something of interest here or here. I hope this is of some value to you.

Greg, Dakota and Mason’s both have their hubs in Houston, only I don’t know where they are located at in city.

Yes you should. You get to pick you own lumber. Also it is only 3.6 miles for the festival. By Houston standards this is just a stones throw away.

madts…I checked out their website after the last post and put them in my address book. My wife and I always take a few extra days when we go out of town for a show so that we can take in the sights and visit any lumberyards that seem interesting.
thanks…

I’ve been going to these guys for some time now. They are really cool guys, and friendly as hell. I don’t know a lot of the technically correct terms for some types of wood/cuts and these guys are really understanding. Really don’t like going to some places and them treat you as if you don’t know what you’re doing because you don’t know some of the terminology. And they’re in the Heights, so they’re in an ideal location. They also have a great selection of exotics and large flitches and mantels.

I use Houston Hardwoods as well. I’ve found them to be cheaper than Clark’s, although I like Clark’s too.

Since I live on the east side of HTown, I use Clark’s because it is closer to me. All you have to do is ask. They will answer your questions and/or show you what they have.

Note: They have a discount bin. You might want to check it out. They put some of their “shorts”, boards less than 48 inches and three inches or so wide (or narrower). They sell these boards for 50% off regular price. Some of the more popular species include red oak, poplar and maple. However, maple has been in short supply lately.
They carry S4S stuff as well as rough 4/4 lumber, and all sorts of sheet goods.

Good luck.

Now if you want to travel a little further, you might want to try the saw mill I buy from. These are really nice folks, have excellent wood at good prices and will even help you pick through their stock. They have Mesquite, Aromatic Red Cedar, Quarter-sawn Oak (Red and White), Ambrosia Maple, Bois D’Arc, Pecky Cypress, Cherry, Elm and a bunch of others. Wood is in 4/4, 6/4 and 8/4 of various widths and lengths. All the wood has been kiln dried to under 10% and sits under cover. They also have some live edge big boards.
This is M & G Saw Mill just about 8 miles west of Huntsville. I live in the Woodlands and it is less than an hour drive for me. Greg and his son are woodworkers and very happy to work with you. They have a website like www.mandgsawmill.com. Take a big vehicle to load up lots of wood, It is really worth the trip up there.

OldWrangler…thanks…I’m not sure if we will also be able to get to M&G after our Houston show since we have a show in Baton Rouge the following weekend but we will be doing a show in the Woodlands two weeks after Houston and should have time to check them out afterwards
