I’m wondering if there’s a way to get the measurements from the parts list laid over the layout.

For example if a piece is laid out 12” x 13” I want to know which way on the layout is the 12 vs 13

Has anyone been able to do this?

You’ve picked up on one of the minor drawbacks with Sketchup and the Cutlist plugin but the real problem is actually a little different than the one you’re noticing.

The issue isn’t that Cutlist doesn’t put the dimensions on the layout sheets. The problem is that the program assumes that the larger of the two dimensions is always the length. In the example you mention, the layout will orient the board with the 13” going along the length and the 12” across the width of the 4’x8’ sheet.

That’s a problem at times, especially when building narrow cabinet boxes. A 24” deep cabinet box that’s just 20” wide will have a bottom in which the grain direction goes across the shorter length. Sketchup and cutlist will have you cutting it the opposite way and result in a useless part if you don’t notice the problem and correct it manually.

Lately I’ve just stopped using cutlist because cross-referencing large parts lists was time-consuming and made it easy for the builders to make mistakes. Now I tend to print up 3D representations of assemblies and components and let people use those to build. The layout feature of Cutlist is still handy at times but I usually just use it for a general guide.
