I’m wondering if there are any blog posts, or websites with a bunch of info about wood finishing. Such as the differences between the oils and if some shouldn’t be used on certain woods, or what’s type of finish is best for the wood. Like I don’t know the difference between tung oil, danish oil, or boiled linseed oil, obviously they’re made from different stuff but i don’t know why you’d use one instead of the other. So just whatever good general info about the topic would be nice, thanks.

You need to read Bob Flexner over at Pop Woodworking. He has a great book, called Wood Finishing 101. He explains all that and cuts through the advertising and marketing based confusion. He has several other titles that delves a little deeper, but if just want the basics, that is the book.

Thanks, one question, I was finishing this little wine bottle holder with tung oil and I didn’t notice it was low gloss so it doesn’t have the shine I’m wanting. Can i just switch to high gloss for my next coat or should I same it down and start over with high gloss? Or put polyurethane over the low gloss to help it?

The final coat determines the sheen usually.

as long as the oil is cured….you can topcoat with most anything else which determines your sheen. Waxing or rubbing with steel wool after that can further affect the sheen
