Cricket,
I got a Video Ad yesterday scared the crap out of me. It just started playing on it’s own, scared my dog too.
I usually have my volume off just for this reason.

Anyways I haven’t seen any pop-up ads.

Were you on a mobile device? I notice pop-ups when I’m on my phone but not when on a laptop/desktop. Annoying as heck. Popups are an extremely hostile way to advertise.

If I’m not signed in I get one with almost every page. Annoying.

There is an ad or two on every page. The popups occur if you are using an older version of windows. Try google chrome and see if the popups go away.

Thanks for your response. It may have been a survey—I confess I simply close pop-up ads without reading them. Were you running a survey that presented visitors with a pop-up on the day of my report? If not, it must have been something else.

I have not seen this again since my original post, so whatever it was is not affecting me at this time. BTW, I am using an iPad 2 with Safari, if that helps.

I don’t have any control over which Google ads we see as it depends on your search history on Google, the topic on the page, etc. If you have that function of Google blocked then they can get pretty generic at times. I was searching for some information on cameras so now of course I am seeing all kinds of ads related to photography on every site I go to tonight. LOLOL

I’m sure you understand the difference between in-line ads, which we’ve all seen for some time, and POP-UP ADS, which seem to be a new and much more annoying, obtrusive and frustrating phenomenon on LJ. POP-UP ADS cover the screen with an advertisement, obscuring the actual content and requiring the victim to click somewhere on the ad window to use the site.

I just experienced a POP-UP ad for Verizon/Kontrera served up by Google “Ad Choices” when I accessed the site while not logged in. Perhaps this will help your investigation.

Folks get an ad blocker and move on. It’s like complaining your television is too loud when all you need to do is turn down the volume.

My Television is always to loud.

So that’s all I have to do is get an Ad Blocker and that will turn the Volume Down.
