I am looking for help on a jig that Peter Lloyd briefly touches on in his book “Heirloom Boxes” 2010 printing. I would just post pictures from his book but that might infringe on copyright laws. It is in reference to how he makes blind variable dovetails.

Anyway the information he gives is on pages 20,21 and 22. On page 22 he states “I used the Leigh for a long time but I have now moved on to a system, which I more or less dreamed up from scratch, that uses the sliding carriage on my shaper. ” He states a jointer would work as well.

There are a couple pictures of a very simple appearing jig. two boards bolted 90 degrees across two bottom boards. and a very brief description which doesn’t give enough detail for me to understand.

If anyone here has access to this book maybe you can shed some light on this.

Thanks

Sorry I don’t have any info on that jig,but if you do a search on Ljs I bet you will find someone else who made the jig you want or someone who has a cool jig of their own.

edit
I found this on line.

Thanks Jim, no I’ve looked pretty thoroughly and haven’t seen anything yet. It may pop up somewhere.

Jim, he does recommend it on his website but I don’t think he uses it. The dovetails on his boxes are all half blinds. The ones I see in his book and website anyway. It appears the Gifkins only does through dovetails.

In his book Peter mentions that he did dovetails by hand for years then used the Leigh for some time then went to his own self made jig. He alluded to the Leigh Jig as being on the particular side for getting set up right. (my words).

The books copyright was 2002 and last printing was 2010 so I suppose he could be using a different process at this time. I really like the blind dovetails on his boxes and would sure like to know how he does it.

Hi Daniel
I came across your question just by chance this morning and thought that i’d try to answer your question.
So, i’ve made a start – i’ve joined this forum! i’m com’letely new to forums so i don’t really know any of the etiquette so forgive me if i make mistakes. I’m also a very slow typist so this will probably be the longest post I’ll ever write.
I though the best way to answer your question (baring in mind my aversion to lots of words) would be a video. so I’ve put the first two up on youtube. i’m now wondering how I’m going to do any more without editing software or knowledge. I think I might be headed on a steep learning curve.
Anyway I’m going to give it a go… have a look at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qye20krfKaM
All the best, Peter

Peter, it would be great if you would post a few of your boxes as projects so that a wider variety of people could see them.

Thank you for that welcome. I’m trying now to make an edited video – a bit more tricky than standing talking to a camera… meanwhile I’m not sure about ‘projects’ but I have posted some in progress shots on my facebook page – https://www.facebook.com/pages/Peter-Lloyd-Jewellery-Boxes-desk-boxes-ring-boxes/141170945925605?ref=hl . I’ll try to keep that one going but I have to say with all this computer stuff and social media I do sometimes feel like I’m spinning plates.

Thanks Peter, I will check out your Facebook page. I do think if you posted one of your projects here it would be quite a hit.
