I have a Powermatic Air Cleaner and I need to change the first filter. I can find a few quality filters that are the exact same size and will fit perfectly, the problem is that they all list a MERV rating that may or may not be too low for the Powermatic. I usually will use a factory replacement item, but the non stock filters are WAY cheaper than stock. I worry if I go too high on the MERV rating that it will choke down the performance of the unit and if I go too low it will prematurely clog the secondary filter. Does anyone out there have a suggestion of which MERV level to go with. I cant seem to find it for the Powermatic.

I would recommend Wynn Environmental for replacements. http://wynnenv.com/products-page/ambient-filter-pricing/

I don’t know the factory MERV rating, but I’m sure they would if you give them a call. Very good to work with, happy to answer questions, very knowledgeable.

Going too high on the MERV rating will reduce the volume of air, but do you really want to be blowing the finest particles, that have the most health impact, around? I’d rather have slightly lower airflow and cleaner air; YMMV.

According to the wikipedia site http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minimum_efficiency_reporting_value

MERV 5-8 is used for workspaces
