In the ongoing struggle of “man vs machine”, there have been many milestones. Garry Kasparov vs Deep Blue, Sara Connors vs the T-1000, George Jestson vs “this crazy thing”, etc… But today another epic battle has been fought: Man vs Makerbot!

The low-down is this: Jorg Sprav, of The Slingshot Channel fame, has released one of his favorite designs (the “Rambone”) for free on the web. He has provided both 3d printable and woodworking plans for it. Challenge, ACCEPTED!

Printed Construction: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=Mbu5xcL9o98
Users Guide: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NKdFnR4mKcw

I’ll spare you the play-by-play, but in the end, I was able to complete the wooden design, including finish, while the Makerbot’s print was still at 82%. (That doesn’t include the clean-up it will need to be useable.)

Therefore, lesson learned, if it all came down to a Dennis the Menace battle for world domination, we would indeed emerge victorious our robotic nemeses! (Comforting to know. You may now sleep easy this night!)

The purpose of this article is to share observations about the common mistakes when creating masters carved portraits and sculptures of human figures. And also try to analyze these errors and find ways to eliminate them. Podiskutiruem:)

Negative examples-illustration will lead not to inadvertently touched offensively, and that’s good work will show in the context of the conversation.
“Effect Of Frankenstein

The term “Frankenstein effect” at the time I briefly explained Igor Ivchenko. Unfold the concept. As we remember, the literary and mythical Frankenstein is the person collected surgically way of other people’s body parts. It is clear that with the aesthetic, artistic point of view such a artificial person looked scared. A similar perception of “a scary, ugly, ugly, ridiculous, ridiculous” often occurs when you browse many carvers work of our Club. The feeling occurs instantly-with a sculpture or relief can look compositionally interesting and impressive, being busy, masterfully carved, or even gain a big audience ratings!

So what’s the point? A case of Anatomy and everything. (On conventions and groteske in carving a moment.) The most annoying and often at first sight imperceptible errors occur because the violation of the fundamental aspect ratio, the ratio of the masses. More “simple” and visible errors-this is not correct, “planted” parts (wrong turn of the ear, the eye of different size, etc.)

Let’s start with the portrait of human head image-the most evident effect of Frankenstein.
Errors in Treta

“Discovery” that I once did, it is easiest to illustrate the classic sculptural portrait of Nefertiti.

The basic and most frequently recurring error carvers is. ... a log. Look at the white markings-I highlighted the cylinder head is a woman. Imagine what diameter should be log-logging to cut out the portrait height of, say, 50 cm. It is difficult to find such a balance beam, and cut the eager hands itch! Especially if not sculpt and čirk-čirk felt-tip pen on the balance beam and for the cause!

So, you have the right size of logs was not found, but in the hands of such a sweet polenyško! Get a thought funny experiment: skomandujte Nefertiti “SMEAR-BUT! RETRACTABLE TOW-HEAD LEAD! “and imagine what our Lady straightens the neck up to the vertical position and pull the Chin-neck, almost touching his collar bone. Oh, the joy! Now we can fit in a Nefertiti like sticks, which podsohlo you on the balcony and had a star hour. Cut from brevnyška “humble” the Princess looks very silly, but that’s not the main thing, right? ;)

Unfortunately, this is not a joke: perhaps half of all amateur busts out of our Club Gallery corny boxed in a log. Portraits of your characters, fellow masters, carved on the rack “attention, head pull!” and look great because as a bombastic wooden istukančiki. To verify this, run the profile a straight line on the bottom of the contour of the neck up (see photo). The Nefertiti, like all normal people with a natural head position neck line goes exactly on the bridge of the nose. If your sculptures line the neck comes out on top-congratulations, you made the log!

So, the most common, in my opinion, a mistake-the natural tilt of the neck and the articulation of this skull.

The second error sculpture portrait is “the lack of a skull. Here are two reasons: again “charm” logs, and ignorance of the anatomy of the skull head. According to my observation, Astaire usually do not leave mass at the back of the head or at the top of the head. A very useful exercise in that regard is cut once the skull, to understand the anatomical structure of the head. Or a lot of paint and/or polepit′ skull head. At one time over my “anatomic èkzersisom”- carved female skull, bantered, saying many Wizard “fruitless this occupation, but the exercise proved very useful to me.

Other technical errors of carving the portrait-ignorance of basic proportions, structure details. Without touching the theme of portrait resemblance and expressing emotions, human head is pretty hard template map. For example, the line of the mouth is not midway between the tip of the nose and the tip of the Chin, and closer to the nose. For example, the ear is correctly positioned on the head between the imaginary parallel lines from the base and the tip of the nose (see picture), etc. in any textbook on anatomy you will find these proportions. Shape errors

Many mistake the sculptures of human figures in general are also dictated by the limitations of log-master invents a variety of exotic poses to fit onto the cylinder limited the diameter (or in bar-”top five”)-and often donates anatomy. In our gallery is easy to find a good hundred sculptures with shorter arms-legs, narrow shoulders, etc. Such captives logs!

Many masters, however, are very proud of their ingenuity, they say “fit in the log” is in itself a difficult artistic task. And for me, this is a conversation for the poor ”, it should tell you the result, not the master?

Another layer of sculptural errors in our amateur work is deepening in naturalism, without a decent knowledge of anatomy. Here is just a trap. After all, people have so many different bones, muscles! Why try to provaât′ them, if still a mistake without proper knowledge? Here again the notorious “effect of Frankenstein-some strange bumps and dimples where they shouldn’t be, and vice versa.

Recurring error-short arm shapes, even sculptures carved from laminated block. Don’t know how to explain, breaking down … Sin, and amateurs-beginners, and even professional Wizard. But everything is simple-to respect in the thread.

Another characteristic is Croup’s Palm on sculptures, disproportionate hands and body in General. But Palm is one of the key points of emphasis on sculpture. What do I do?

Venture number “recepturnik”.

1. painting and moulding before cutting. To find the ratio of the masses to build successful composition before carving.

2. get away from hypnosis round logs and monolithic beam-”five”. Not a sculpture for the logs, and logs for sculpture. And if the sculpture does not fit in the stem or stick the bar-the monolithic power of the boards.

3. not yet studied in theory and practice the basics of anatomy is to move away from naturalism and excessive detail in sculpture. Here I read more, and let us think.

The human body, especially the face-the most difficult subjects for the image, it is a fact. But look how wonderfully talented sculpture with conditional, generic forms! The author is absolutely not in reproach, he achieved his goal the most concise, without venturing into the anatomy.

Alexander Domašov, «Goodbye» !https://s3.amazonaws.com/vs-lumberjocks.com/n14o14j.jpg

And even the human face can be given in the sculpture very conditionally, “one stroke”. See how this makes James Weinstein. There is only the outline of the person, and to read the whole mood. Lack of detail often introduces an element of mystery and understatement, and the viewer mentally in my head dorisovyvaet images and scene.

4. If the set depict shape conditional “keep” argument, not udarâjsâ in the details of the individual fragments. When you begin to cut through the fingers, eyes and ears have to do-and matter-travelled, sculpture collapsed or seriously deteriorated.
Stylisation, grotesque

Styling and the grotesque have nothing to do with “Frankenstein effect”. Talented stylized figures with all conceivable and inconceivable violation of proportions yet anatomičny and harmonious.

The nose longer ear:)
Julia Ral′nikova, “Absinthe”

And here lovers legs crooked, but well, however, what a beauty and harmony!

I was reading Pravda for an hour or so., and then checked to see what Oleg was up to….....and ran across
the above article , really excellent. I ran out of time to edit the pictures into the text per original (more cake )
Nefertiti was the opening point and was shown at the beginning of discourse . His comments about the grotesque not being a frankenstein effect , referencing ” Absynth ” . He seems pleased enough with the
‘sublime’ ” Tantra ”. The seated figure at the top of page is by James Weinstein .

I should mention that the word ‘Wizard ’ should translate as the word ’ Master’ i.e. Master carver . When Oleg was referencing the the positioning of arms and (palm) hands , one work immediately came to mind :
Michelangelo’s ” Tomb of Lorenzo de’ Medici”, I have never been so fascinated by the Positioning of hands
in any work as when i first saw it , just blew me away , the conveyed subtlety of those hands is just exquisite !

especially the out turned palm here , as opposed to just resting on the knee, is such a surprising and delightful choice .

Well, in my amateurish work , I still pay great attention to hands , they can convey so much in a composition, and should not be hurried through .

In this early design stage , you can see how i have stopped to consider the position of a hand and what it should be
‘doing’ . ( top figure left ) and the other hands are just outlines for now . The pieces to the left ,which are to represent the’ wind ’, do not compliment the composition at all, and tend to diminish the figures if presented
this way, which is immediately apparent .

By using a vanishing point , i can draw attention back to the figures and provide a sense of ‘motion’
and allow the arm do what it will .

The ‘wind ’ pieces are finished but this work has a long way to go to completion . Cutting the compound
curves on them ( scroll saw ) and bringing them to a finished state , went smoothly . i wanted to have them
finished and done before continuing on . (1/2 ” oak )
