Maybe I don’t quite understand the whole “Daily Top 3” thing, but, looking at the pages just now, I count, in the daily top 3…

9 (nine) projects saying “1 day ago”
6 (six) projects saying “2 days ago”
8 (eight) projects saying “3 days ago”
6 (six) projects saying “4 days ago”
4 (four) projects saying “5 days ago”

Now, I realise that where exactly a day ends/begins etc etc from a “top 3” viewpoint can make things somewhat strange, so one might have 4 from “1 day ago”, but surely that would mean only 2 from “2 days ago”.

OK.
I’m just going to say it.
I think it’s broken.

Oh, and while I’m here – this project seems to have a strangely large number of views – I recall this problem from a year or so ago.

I have long though the same thing.

Some projects are in the TOP 3 for an hour…..and some for quite a while.

But, I have just chalked it up to time-available issues on the part of whomever is in charge of doing that stuff.

Actually, for years, I have never looked at the TOP 3 page.

I just click on projects and do my own sorting of which I like and ….........

Maybe if $$$$$$$ was involved…......it would be different….........and that is a weak attempt at humor.

I think it consists of projects that have Qualified for a “Daily Top 3”...
... which means it could include weeks or months worth of Qualified projects…

... and beings this website is world-wide, it could consist of top projects in any 24 hour period…

I really think we can put this ”problem” to bed now… can’t we?

Joe, I have a VERY high opinion of this site and those behind it. So many bitch about this and that.

It is FREE !!!

And the #1 site of any kind and type that I frequent.

I value so much the guidance from others, the reviews, the topics, the projects, just visiting the site and spending a while reading…......well, you cannot help but learn so very much.

I hope you did not think I was criticizing this site as to the Top 3 issue.

As I said, I had chalked it up to something very much not a problem for me.

I like this site, the folks the topics, the projects way too much to be critical of such a great FREE resource.

Hell I would pay a fee just to access this site…......if it stayed as good as it has been, and continues to be.

My very best. Bruce.

It appears to me that a project is eligible for a top 3i. The first 24 hours that it is posted. If at any time during that 24 hours you can make that top 3, and if you do, your project is designated as such forever. So some days there could be a number of them, other days far fewer. The top 3 page is a listing of all projects that have made the top 3 , starting with the most recent. On the home page you can see the current top 3 and top 15. I only realized all this this week when I made the top : for the first time.

Errr, no.
I don’t see how it’s a “Daily Top 3”, when there are nine of them.

We could rename it the “Daily Top Some”?

So many bitch about this and that

If I came across as “bitching”, I apologise – that wasn’t my intent. From where I sit, it’s a bug, just a bug. Not a big bug. Not a bug full of venom. But a bug nonetheless.
And, as a very famous Apple Technical Note once said – “always remember, bugs are not our friends”

I was just reporting it – I used to get pretty angry when, at shows, people would come up to me and say “Have you fixed this bug”? (I was a software developer). And I’d say “err, no, when did you report it?”. And they’d say they hadn’t! How was I supposed to fix a problem no-one had told me about?

That isn’t the top 3. The Top 3 is on the front page of the site and only contains projects from the last 24 hours.

Wht you are looking at is the collection of all the Top 3’s.

This is the Top 3 on the front page:

The reason it works this way is so projects aren’t disadvantaged by being posted late in the day. Since it gives each project 24 hours, there could be many more than 3 on a day. I don’t see the problem. It’s just a list of especially popular products by day. So what if there are more than three on some days if they were one of the top 3at some point in that day?

I have some TiteBond III here – no, wait – not available here – I have some rabbits, so give me a while and I’ll make you uncracked with some home grown hide glue.

How can there be more “Top 3”s than 3 per day?
I understand people explaining how the algorithm works to get this result.
I think I’m arguing that, therefore, because this is the result, the algorithm is broken. I look back to the olympics of 1972, I see only 3 people on the podium – the top 3 in that event, for that session of games.

There is nothing wrong about the Daily Top 3 page. Dallas is correct, it is a compilation of all the daily Top 3 projects since the inception of the site, there are 787 pages of top 3’s going all the way back to 2886 days ago. When you submit a project it has 24 hours to make it to the Top 15 and then to the Top 3. If it makes it to the Top 3 it gets a “badge” and then it shows up on the Top 3 page with all of the other projects that made it to the Top 3’s where it will reside for as long as there is a Lumberjocks, or unless the powers behind this site change it.

It’s not broken. It’s the way it works. Given that projects can be submitted anytime during a day, how else would it work?

It’s a rolling 24 hour period. Meaning if you post a project at noon the project has till noon the next day to make it to the top 3. Once your project reaches the top 3 it will always be a top 3 project even if on hour 10 of your 24 hours you get bumped out by a new project. It has to be a rolling time frame because there is no cut off time for submissions. So to sum it up it just means your project made it to the top 3 sometime during your 24 hour period.

Clear as mud?

How can there be more “Top 3”s than 3 per day?

Because there are more days in a week than 1 day and days in a month than 1 day etc.

What you have been looking at is what historically made it to “Top 3” status.

There could plausibly be a new “Top 3” every second or less the way it is set up.

Each project gets it’s own 24 hours to reach it’s highest point. That 24 hours starts at the time it’s posted, not when the clock strikes midnight, therefore, if I post a project at 01:00:00 and you post a project at 01:00:01 your 24 hours starts 1 second after mine and ends 1 second aft mine ends. Both projects could be #1 in a chronological time frame ie: their own 24 hour period.
Mine could get 20 views and 3 comments in it’s 24 hours and yours might only have 18 views and 2 comments, but that still might make it #1 after my 24 hour period is over.

Or, an easier way to explain: It’s magic.

Oh, NO, Bruce, I was NOT talking about your comment at all… I hadn’t even read your comment before I made mine.

I just saw some logical explanations possible… and this thread exploding into ANOTHER shooting gallery…

Dallas… exactly what I said, except I should have also said YEARS! :) LOL
