I almost burned this, but then decided to spend half an hour salvaging what I could. I first flattened the piece as much as possible with my band saw. Then I put it through the drum sander to get it uniform and ended up with a 3/16th piece as shown. I am going to use it for a box lid insert, shaping the frame of the lid so that I don’t lose any of that terrific grain. It’s only about 4”x7”, but it’s going to be on a box filled with candy for my wife’s Valentine’s Day present.

The hickory from which this was salvaged was on my property. When we felled it to build, the stump was so heavy that only a large tractor with a front-end loader could lift it. I took it straight to a sawmill and had it cut into 8/4. This crotch is from the waste of the initial felling, which went to the woodpile.

Nice! My wife loves to rib me about not being able to use certain pieces of my firewood… but sometimes you just gotta do what you just gotta do.

Very pretty piece of wood. Glad you didn’t burn it. I see a horse head in the middle- right side and a bear trying to bite the horse’s nose.
