Hey guys and gals,

Shane and Aaron here from Baileigh. We are going to have some fun again with the Lumberjocks crowd. We are looking to give away some machinery to help promote our expanding line of woodworking solutions.

We are looking for ideas for a contest, Something new……

We are all ears. Once we see something we like, the contest will start.

Also check out some of the videos we have been making to help you guys with the benifits and features of our equipment. We are adding videos daily so check back often.

My suggestion: A contest where I win.

After that, I would say:
Question: “Why do you enjoy woodworking over the long haul?”
See what are the most interesting answers.

I am a college student where wood working is my hobby and enjoyable, but because of this…. many fancy tools are out of my price range, so if there is a way to make the contest feasible for limited tool people like me, it would be appreciated. (I sure could put that mortiser to use!!!)

Many people do not have the budget for specialized machines (think: thickness planer/sander or lathe), and must make jigs or improvise a way in which to accomplish a task. How about the most creative (&/or absurd) work-around (or jig), for not having the “right” tool/machine for the task at hand. Not necessarily the making of shop-made “machine”, just jigs, attachments and techniques. This would even the playing field by allowing creativity and ingenuity to prevail & not be about how well a shop is equipped. Plus, the submissions could also give others ideas that could be implemented in their shops. (Would that be a “win-win”???)

Everybody loves a random draw! Well, I don’t actually know that, but I appreciate the 1 entry per household chances behind that type of contest. Why not an essay contest, one page or less. Or making plans and a script for a 22 minute episode of a shop build “widget”...kind of like one of those sponsored shows.

I too could use one of those mortising machines, and who else couldn’t think of a use for a 25” wide spiral head planer.

Not everyone can or wants to make a video, and not everyone wants to ‘like’ something on a certain social media site – so I would propose the contest be based on written entries right here on LJs. I like the random draw too, its less flashy but still gets the job done!

How about a 2×4 challenge. Each person uses 1 construction grade 2×4x8 and designs and builds what they want and posts pictures of it either here or on the Baileigh site. Any joinery method is acceptable and doesn’t have to be from the 2×4 (dowels, biscuits, domino, etc.). Depending on the number of entries, the top 5 or 10 projects are selected and then a random winner is selected. Everyone that enters should receive a shirt, hat or some swag.

I think that the winner should have some say in the prize, for example, if you were giving away a table saw, someone may not need, but would need a jointer, maybe they would pay the difference if any.

I like Fish’s idea, but let’s kick it up a notch. What can you build from a single toothpick?

Fish,
I raise your 2×4 to a 2×8 so we can make something a little more substantial.

Bill (Wseand)

Art of negotiation, how about splitting the difference and going with a 2×6. Just messing around, if this is chosen, I don’t have an issue with a 2×4,6,8, whatever the consensus is or what the Baileigh guys select.

I think a contest, randomly drawn, sharing folks first favorite tool or budget upgrade and why. For example, it may be that inexpensive jig made out of scrap wood that allows you to sharpen a specific tool or a jig for a table saw that allows a certain cut they make all the time. I have kids, which means I am on a very limited budget. Homemade jigs are great for people like me.
